As part of the Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance Project, also known as “Raise the Roadway,” construction on the span began in 2013 and elevated the deck of the Bayonne Bridge from 151 feet to 215 feet in order to accommodate larger, 21st-century container ships that were unable to fit under the bridge’s previous configuration. The Bayonne Bridge, which connects to Bayonne, N.J., and Port Richmond, was completed in November 1931 and was the world’s longest steel-arch bridge for 45 years.

A cashless tolling system for the span was introduced in April 2019.
